Reactive Acid Stains

Acid possesses the ability to chemically transform nearly any surface.  An acid based stain is designed to interact with your concrete floor’s surface.  When it does, it renders a marble like appearance.  Acid stains are characterized by their translucent finishes.  They have yield a variegated tone and are typically more durable.  When selecting an acid finish, we advise clients to be open to the outcome.  Acid stains are less forgiving and more difficult to control.  Even when applied by following all the mandated protocols, the outcome can be slightly different than expected.  That is the beauty and surprise of acid stains.

Non Reactive Water Based Stains

Similar to applying stains to wood, one must be highly selective and do ample research before applying stains to concrete.  Water based stains do not chemically interact with concrete.  Due to their non reactive nature, what you see is what you get.  There is no guesswork involved when these types of stains.  The outcome is predictive which is why most homeowners and contractors use them.  The drawback is that they tend to yield an opaque appearance.  Even with dilution, a water base stain will not render the same appearance as acid.  Keep this in mind when selecting the right stain for your needs.

Acrylic Based Concrete Stains

Acrylic stains are very similar to water in that they yield similar results and are easy to control.  Acrylic and acid may be used in concert to provide an artistic finish.  These stains are opaque in finish.  DIYers and contractors will sometimes apply an acrylic stain to cover up an unintended result.  Acrylic is great for hiding mistakes.  If you decide to take the bull by the horns and stain your concrete as a weekend project and happen to achieve a look that you can’t live with, contact us right away for a stain correction.  It would be our pleasure to make it right.

Avoid a $10,000 Fine

Acrylic and water based stains are environmentally safe.  They have lower VOC content.  When applying acrylic and water based stains in a daycare, school, hospital or home, these types of stains are optimal.  Should anyone get caught pouring a non-neutralized acid based stain down the drain, they will face a $10,000 fine.  Making sure that our environment is safe from the hazards of man is a serious business – one that we are prepared to take on.  Most Americans wish they could live and work in such a temperate and beautiful environment.  As a company, we do our best to ensure that it is protected by using environmentally safe products and neutralizing acid stains before discarding them.
